Fr Hugh’s Homily for 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time
After that first reading, I thought of handing out sheets and getting the women to write down what they thought the Perfect Husband’s qualities might be. Then we could share, compare and contrast. There are various ways of interpreting the Bible and some would find this passage too hard to take. But to get the best out of it we have to take it back to the culture and setting of the original writer and ask what ‘he’ as it would be, was trying to say here. I think he did intend this to be a passage of praise. It was chosen for a wedding I was at recently in just this way. Possibly we can reassess it if we imagine him thinking of his own wife rather than writing down a blueprint for any perfect wife……
