DEACON GEORGE’S HOMILY FOR THE 16th SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME
“Why does God allow the bad to flourish? The author of the book of Wisdom tries to answer this pressing question. And also, “Why is God so patient and moderate with Israel’s enemies?” The author argues that God’s moderation is not a result of weakness, it is his justice, that has its source in strength. But how does God actually use his sovereign strength, he asks? The answer is, that he uses it, in favour of governing with great lenience. For God’s mercy is heaped on everyone in sight, even on traditional enemies. In today’s Gospel parable, the kingdom of heaven is compared to a farmer who is confronted by a serious problem. His field of wheat is alive with darnel. Darnel is a poisonous weed. It is indistinguishable from wheat until its growth is advanced. The farmer’s workers want to weed out the darnel, but the farmer tells them to leave it alone, because he is worried that uprooting the darnel will endanger the wheat……
