Fr Hugh’s Homily for 12th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Dorothy, the scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion are all on the yellow brick road (as in the famous song) in search of what they need. (I was once the head of the munchkins in a pantomime.) Dorothy needs to get home, the scarecrow, a brain, the Tin Man, a heart, the Cowardly Lion, courage. Eventually they reach the Wizard of Oz but discover, pulling back a curtain, that he is nothing but an ordinary man using machinery to pretend he is a wizard. But what he can do is grant their wishes. Dorothy gets home, but the wizard gives the others each a symbolic gift to show them that all the time they really had what they were looking for, they just needed help to realise it. They had been living without knowing their full selves….
